Overview:
To act as a Machine Operator of the Packaging Division of California Community News, with responsibility for the efficient operation of packaging equipment to ensure customers receive a complete and quality newspaper product and to contribute to the division’s efforts in attaining the goals and objectives of the Company.

Responsibilities:
To perform make-ready and set-up on the inserter and peripheral equipment that ensures production of a quality and complete package; ensures that the equipment is available and operating for the production run at the time scheduled and the automatic repair system is programmed with correct information, all parameters are set within guidelines to support the run.

To perform the duties of set-up and hopper feeding when assigned to the inserter which includes placing correct product in the insert hopper, maintaining a feeding pace that is sufficient to maintain an uninterrupted operation at the inserter and repairing missed or doubled inserts in an efficient manner.

To perform the required functions and duties when assigned to the palletizer line which include: properly moving tying equipment, changing strap, rethreading a strap break, changing, fixing minor jams, changing zone as needed, setting correct bundle size, programming and efficiently operating of Palletizer equipment, producing correct number of bundles as required, inspect the contents of the inserted package to ensure the package is complete and advertising and editorial products are being distributed to the zones requested. Also performed the required duties when assigned to Material Handle which include: safely operate forklift, properly scanning and moving material from the warehouse to the insert lines, execute line audits, breakouts, and able to identify multiple versioned products.

Assist in training Packagers in:
  • Hopper feeding when assigned to the inserter, which includes placing correct product in the insert hopper, maintaining a feeding pace that is sufficient to ensure an uninterrupted operation at the inserter and repairing miss or doubled inserts in an efficient manner.
  • Conduct Packager safety training.
  • Tying line operation which includes changing strap, rethreading strap breaks, fixing minor jams, operating Scitex printer, programming and operating Bundlers, programming and operating Palletizer equipment, producing correct number of bundles as required, inspect the contents on the inserted package to ensure the package is complete and advertising and editorial products are being distributed to the zones requested.

To create a safe working environment by practicing safe working habits and maintaining the work area in a clean and orderly condition at all times.

Qualifications:
REQUIREMENTS
  • Must have all the skills and knowledge required of a Packager, Material Handler and Palletizer Operator.
  • Ability to interact well with a diverse workforce and have resolve problems.
  • Must be detail oriented and able to handle pressure in a fast paced environment.
  • Must be skilled in inserting, palletizer, Material Handler and stacking, material handling equipment, proper interpretation of the daily/weekly insert plan, ink jet application of product zone identification numbers.
  • Good communication skills and ability to communicate in English.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS


  • Must be able to stand, kneel and crouch for long periods of time
  • Must be able to lift in excess of 50 pounds
  • Must be able to maintain a safety-minded approach to all activities



Starting Pay:       $12.69 - $19.04 (commensurate to experience)
Shifts:                   2nd shift
Weekend work:   Yes
