SHELL GAME

Hello colleagues,
WELL HERE WE GO (SAM THE SAVIOR OR THE DEVIL HIM SELF ) WE THE UNION WERE ASKED BY THE COMPANY IF WE HAD IDEAS ON HOW WE COULD IMPLEMENT 1.8 MILLION DOLLARS IN CUTS !!! YEH RIGHT ! WE WERE NOT OFFERED A BUY OUT,NOTHING !! WE WERE OFFERED NOTHING !!
WELL I DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU BUT I DON’T
HAVE THE DESIRE TO CUT MY THROAT OR THE THROATS OF ANYBODY ELSE.THAT IS THE SAME APROACH THE COMPANY USED TO GET RID OF DRIVERS AND MAILROOM PEOPLE.APARENTLY CLOSING THE VALLEY AND GETTING A PERPORTED SAVINGS OF 55-60 MILLION ISN’T ENOUGH
FOR THIS GREEDY MAN.OLYMPIC IS IN THE PROCESS OF CUTTING THE SIZE OF THE NEWSPRINT AND ORANGE COUNTY WILL SOON FOLLOW, SO WHEN IS ENOUGH GOING TO BE ENOUGH !!! THE COMPANY SAYS THE LOS ANGELES TIMES IS NOT LOSING MONEY SO IS THIS JUST PURE GREED ! THE UNION ASKED FOR PROOF THE COMPANY IS NOT PICKING ON THE UNION AND WE WERE TOLD WE WERE NOT PRIVY TO THAT INFORMATION.I ASK WHAT ARE THEY TRYING TO HIDE.ARE WE PAYING FOR THE FOLLY OF MANAGMENT ?ARE WE AGAIN PAYING FOR THE DECISIONS OF BOARD DIRECTORS ? AGAIN THE WORKER PAYS FOR THE DUMB DECISIONS OF THE LEADERSHIP THAT WE HAVE NO CONTROL OVER.SAM WANTS TO MAKE CUTS.THEN I SAY START AT THE TOP BEFORE WE FALL OVER FROM BEING TOO TOP HEAVY, LEAVE THE WORKING MAN AND WOMAN ALONE.SAM YOU SAID YOURSELF YOU DON’T NEED OUR MONEY SO CALL OFF YOUR DOGS AND LETS HAVE A REASONABLE CONVERSATION (NO BACK STABBING) OFFER A BUY OUY FOR THE PRESSROOM AND COME CLEAN ON YOUR REAL MOTIVES !!!

It's a done deal, Chuck. You're stuck with Zell. Zell is a lot like Bush II because he wants you to think that he's a regular guy, but you'll find out that he's anything but. Also, one has to ask why he bothered with the Tribune at his age and at a time when he has several times the money he could ever need. My personal opinion is that he's not in it for the money or to support excellence in journalism. I think that his motivation is right out of an Orwell novel. It's having power over others that drives him. The drive to make money is just a red herring. Read about him and his actions -- it's all on the net -- and you'll see that he'll roll over anyone to get his way. Just as George Carlin says in his act, "There's a club in America, and you ain't a member." Sam and the Bush family are members, and they want one thing: More. They get more, and you get less. Partners, ha! Talk to Sam is nothing more than a way for him to size up the kill. Your union is your only hope. Make it work for yourself and your fellow employees.

I agree ! without the union the pressroom would not even have chance to do anything at all. This point may be moot or just maybe together we can make a difference. Its now or never.let all of us and I mean all Times employees rise up as one voice. Sam is just another rich guy who craves power no matter what or who it hurts. This is all one big game for him.How much is enough ?I believe the time to say enough is now !!!

In response to (get my head out of the sand)why would a man who's self confesed has enough money want to cut into my pocket ? I fully understand the ramifications of the declining economy but heres the problem. We the bargaining unit were told this savings was not going back into the paper but to help finance another venture.Am i wrong ? what about the millions already being spent on the cut down ? We were told the L.A. times is makeing money ! lets see the books i'll bet there is something else going on.(looks wrong, smells wrong,)i'll bet this is wrong .

Newspaper 101....

Advertising pays the bills (and our salaries). No advertising, cut costs. If cutting costs can't pay the bills the company goes bankrupt. Company goes bankrupt, no jobs.

Or maybe then Singleton would buy the paper and he would cut more costs. Talk to the guys who used to work at Long Beach Press Telegram!

We have not passed that subtle line between childhood and adulthood until we move from the passive voice to the active voice -- that is, until we stop saying "I'm getting screwed," and start saying "I f**ked up."

Right! You may find this hard to believe, but most workers outside the pressroom think this is hilarious. You are finally taking your fair share of the change and pain. Welcome to the real world.

What do you mean by fair share of the pain.Do you believe if everybody loses ots ok?I for one did not like it when other deptments got staffing cuts or layoffs.I have been here 31 years and know people in the other deptments.Thats simply ludacris to think that by taking everybody down that its a good thing.I wonder if you have any friends ? Or maybe just hanging out with the wrong crowd.I guess you have the philosophy (shoot them all and let God sort them out)I think maybe you have some other issues besides the union.Have a great day !

No, it is not good when everyone loses. But, it is preferable to having the losses always go to the few.

At some point the chickens are too skinny and no longer appetizing. But the fat hog looks real tasty even though the squealing may be unbearable.

Yeh I realize the philosophy of that kind of thinking ,but doesn’t it make more sense to cut at the top ? 1 or 2 vp’s should do it after all if this company is shrinking why do we need so many people at the top of the food chain ?Sams seems to be able to do things alone. So why so many paid for yes men ?how many lawyers do we have and managers that manage managers ?When do the people that make the decisions get blamed for not producing results?

Didn't Sam once comment on Tribune Tower? I think it was something like, "I think I'll turn it into a casino. But first I'll dig a moat around it so I can get a tax break because it is a floating casino."

There will be many top dogs gone as the structure is streamlined. However, I'll wager those people didn't bust-out an hour or two early everyday. Unfortunately, bust-outs are a good indication the bottom is also a bit heavy.

Maybe they are just hanging on to the top dogs until the cuts are done then they will ax them also
