Dear Mr. Pineda:
Thank you for contacting me about the "Employee
Free Choice Act" (EFCA). I appreciate hearing from you
and welcome this opportunity to respond.
I am pleased to inform you that I am a co-sponsor
of S. 842, the "Employee Free Choice Act". Like you, I
believe it is important that American workers have the
right to unionize. In addition, American workers should
also have the opportunity to obtain affordable health care
and work in safe conditions. Furthermore, I believe
companies must be held accountable for any unlawful
actions taken against workers who participate in unions
and should work with employees to improve all working
conditions.
On April 19, 2005 Senator Edward Kennedy
reintroduced EFCA. This legislation would enhance
workers' ability to organize in the workplace by
increasing penalties against unions and companies that
violate labor laws during organizing efforts. This bill
certifies a union if the National Labor Relations Board
(NLRB) finds that a majority of employees have
designated the union as its' bargaining representative.
EFCA would ensure several other priorities for
workers:
? Guarantees workers will not be penalized by
their employers for taking part in organizing
efforts;
? Ensures union workers will have a contract for
protection of employment;
? Increases the amount an employer is required to
pay to the employee for discrimination; and
? Increases civil fines of up to $20,000 per
violation against employers.
EFCA has been referred to the Senate Committee
on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP).
Although I am not a member of the HELP Committee,
please know that I will continue to closely monitor this
situation as it unfolds. Additionally, I will be sure to
keep your suggestions in mind should this legislation
come before the Senate.

Hey ronnie the union is not even in and it has already divided us. Just think how crappy it would be if in.Three party division. Thanks for that feeling YOU HAVE BROUGHT TO OC. A REAL JOURNEYMAN
I'm sorry that you feel that way, and secondly, Tribune is resposibile for any and all the division among us. The Idea is to UNITE not divide. There are over half of the employees in O.C. who agree that we need to protect OUR interests and realize that the only way to do that is to form a UNION. Not everyone is going to agree as we have seen in the past, but alot of former "NO" voters have seen the truth and are now supporters. We respected their position then and respect yours now. Those who do not support Unionizing our shops should have the same respect for the men and women who are willing to stand up for their Trade and their families future.

OC journeyman please gives me another path to take, with corporate greed out of control, and not just in our company. Tell me what is the American worker spouse to do? Give me anything that’s better than what we are trying to do, and I will consider your solution
